Spectrum vowel
WebThis figure shows the source spectrum of the vowel. The acoustic source for vowels is vibration of the glottis. Glottal vibrations result from muscle actions that both 1) push air between the vocal folds, tending to separate them; and 2) tense the vocal folds, tending to pull them back together. Formants are distinctive frequency components of the acoustic signal produced by speech, musical instruments or singing. The information that humans require to distinguish between speech sounds can be represented purely quantitatively by specifying peaks in the frequency spectrum. Most of these formants are produced by tube and chamber resonance, but a few whistle tones derive from periodic collapse of Venturi effect low-pressure zones .

Webspectrum of the stop aspiration is similar to, but much stronger than, that in the spectrogram of /f/. We appear to see some formant structure in the latter half of the aspiration spectrum, presumably because as the aspiration progresses the constriction becomes wider and so the effect of the back cavity resonances become more clearly visible. http://www.u.arizona.edu/%7Eohalad/Phonetics/notes/Formants%20Spectrograms%20and%20Vowels.PDF
