He lived most of his life in and around Cherokee, NC, and was half-Cherokee Indian. In the mid 1960s, he formed the Frosty Mountain Boys but soon changed their name to Maggie Valley Boys. Fairchild performed at the Grand Ole’ Opry on numerous occasions and was inducted into Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2015. Last month, Fairchild appeared in BPR’s “Exploring Southern Appalachia” series.
