WebDiatoms play a significant role in carbon fixation with 40% of primary production in the ocean. Minidiscus spp. are the smallest known centric diatoms of the marine phytoplankton (with most of the cells from the natural environment ranging from 2 to 5 um in diameter). Minidiscus was first described by Hasle in 1973 (Hasle 1973). An estimated 20,000 extant diatom species are believed to exist, of which around 12,000 have been named to date according to Guiry, 2012 (other sources give a wider range of estimates ). Around 1,000-1,300 diatom genera have been described, both extant and fossil, of which some 250-300 exist only as fossils.
